A wood painting technique: wax patina

Here we are going to show you how to create a patina effects using wax.

NB: Wax-based patina should not be used on surfaces in a humid room.

Supplies
Tools
  • 1 stainless steel pan
  • 1 grater
  • 1 knife
  • 1 mixing utensil
  • 1 measuring jug
  • 1 brush, cloth or sponge
  • Beeswax paste, for medium oak, or 1 white candle.
Materials
  • 1 liter (0.26 gallons) of water
  • 100g (3.5 ounces) of beeswax
  • 60g (2.1 ounces) of potassium carbonate or tartar salt
  • 60g (2.1 ounces) of Marseille soap
  • Pigments for a colored patina
Directions

1st step: making the patina

  • Heat some water in the pan.
  • Dice the wax and grate the soap.
  • Once the water is hot, but not boiling, add the wax and soap whilst constantly stirring. In the end, you must obtain a smooth texture.
  • Add the tartar salt.
  • Let it completely cool.
  • In order to obtain a supple and colored wax, add some solvent or some clear oil to the pigments.
  • Add pigments relative to the desired color intensity.

2nd step : applying the patina

  • Apply the patina with a brush, cloth or sponge. This can be done in one or more layers depending on how intense you want the color to be. Be sure not to let it drip!
