Learn how to make an interactive book

Who hasn’t dreamt of seeing the characters of their favorite picture book move? Thanks to a split shank fastener, it’s possible. Become magicians by transforming an inanimate story into an interactive book. If the book is aimed at toddlers, use a thick paper for the objects so that they won’t suffer from multiple manipulations.

Supplies
Tools
  • Pencils
  • Felt-tip
  • Scissors
Materials
  • Card sheets
  • Split shank fasteners
Directions
  • Draw the main design (in this case, a character) and the interactive element (the tail) separately and color them in.

  • Cut out your designs.

  • Stick the main design onto the card sheet by putting it sufficiently off-center so that the interactive element can fit onto the page.

  • Cut a notch into both elements, where they will join together, with a Stanley knife.

  • Insert the slip shank fastener in order to assemble the two together.

  • Draw a background on the card.

Tips
  • It’s possible to put several mobile elements on the same page. Be sure to use sufficiently thick paper so that it doesn’t get damaged with use.
  • To reinforce the mobile elements, cover them with clear cellotape before attaching the slip shank fastener.
