Nigiri Sushi  how to make nigiri salmon sushi  : 

Here we show you how to make nigiri sushi. 'Nigiri' in Japanese means 'grasp', and reflects the way in which we will tenderly grasp rice in our palm to form it into a perfect sushi rice ball, onto which we lay the topping. Impress your dinner party guests with these moreish mouthfulls of nigiri sushi. And then try hosomaki sushi and uramaki sushi!  

Supplies
Tools
  • Chopping board
  • Sharp knife
  • Bowl of water with a dash of rice wine vinegar or sushi rice seasoning - Dip your fingers regularly into the water when handling the rice.
Materials
  • Sushi rice (fully prepared)
  • Smoked salmon 
Directions
  • Prepare the sushi rice.
  • Cut up the smoked salmon into rectangles.
  • Take a small amount of rice in your hands and shape it into an oblong. With a finger, press into the base and make a small indent.

  • Place a piece of salmon on top of the rice and press it down onto the rice, and you have made your first nigiri salmon sushi!

Tips
  • You can make nigiri sushi with a variety of toppings such as:
    • avocado slices
    • fresh, good quality raw fish (sashimi)
    • other cooked fish like mackerel
    • egg omlette
    • other seafood such as prawn, octopus, squid
  • An attractive finishing touch can be to cut a ribbon of seaweed and wrap it around the nigiri as shown in the photo below.
