Supplies
Tools
The joy of sand sculpture is that it requires very few tools and is very eco-friendly. All you will need is:
- a spade
- a basic knife/sculpting tools (trowel, plastic fork, etc)
- Optional : bucket.
- If you don't have a bucket, you can dig a hole, which will fill automatically with water at the beach.
- make sure the hole is close to where you're building.
- Optional: decorating materials (eg.: shells, flags, feathers, etc...)
Materials
- Water (from the ocean is fine)
- Sand
- natural sand is best, as it contains slit and clay
- garden-centre stuff is too pure and won't hold together well
- The beach is a treasure-trove of sand sculpture decorations: shells, flowers, pebbles, seaweed, driftwood can all be used to decorate your sand sculpture.
Directions
Prepare the tools for sand sculpture
- Fill the bucket with water, or dig your hole.
- Use about 1 part sand to 1 part water (though this will depend on the sand: experiment a bit and see what works best).
Choose your sand sculpture technique
- Depending on what you want to make, try one of the three tried-and-tested techniques to make your sand sculpture:
- Be sure to keep adding water and keep compacting your sand so it holds together well.
Finish your sand sculpture
- Use your carving tool to smooth rough edges and shape your sculpture as you wish.
- Use a finer carving tool to add details.
- When you are happy with the sculpture, feel free to embellish it with some decorations.
Tips
- Dry sand does not stick, so be sure to keep adding plenty of water. The wetter the better!
- Plan your sculpture before building it and have a clear idea of how you want it to look.
- Take regular breaks to step back and view your sculpture from further away and from different angles.
