  • Cotton swabs (for blurring lines that are too dark,) or for smoothing over smudges

Directions

Preparation for face painting

  • Seat the child comfortably, facing the light.

  • Protect clothes with paper towels.

  • Pull child's hair back from their face.

  • Apply moisturizing lotion to the child's face to protect their skin. Make sure that the lotion is completely absorbed by the skin before starting to paint.

Begin face painting

  • Draw the main lines of your pattern with the white makeup pencil or with the thin brush dipped in white makeup.

  • Fill in the colors with brushes or makeup pencils.
Note: Always start with the lightest color and work your way darker. Always start at the top of the face and finish at the bottom.

  • Add details for the finishing touch.

Removal of face paints

  • After the party, remove the makeup with soap and water or with sensitive-skin makeup remover.

  • Reapply moisturizing lotion.

Tips

Professional tips

  • Buy your products from specialty stores.
  • Invest in water-based makeup that's easy to apply, dries rapidly, and is easy to remove.
  • Don't buy too large of a color palette when you first start. Choose black, white, and at least the 3 primary colors: red, blue, and yellow. You can use them to make any other color!
  • For girls, plan on using glitter, sequins, gloss, and blush! For boys, think about a sponge to make beards!
  • For little ones that aren't used to wearing makeup, reassure them and do a light makeup job. Try to work quickly and don't put too much makeup near eyes or mouths.
  • For the eyes and the fragile skin surrounding them, avoid glitter or sequins. Use small makeup accents instead.
