Very fashionable in the 60s and then again in the 80s, and now lanyards are making a comeback yet again! Lanyards are also known as scoubidous, the name for which comes from an onomatopoeia used by american jazz singers and was popularised by Sacha Distel in his famous song   "Des pommes, des poires, et des scoubidous...!"

Consisting of simple weaving of flexible plastic, the basic technique allows you to create multicolored lanyards, straight or twisted, to hook onto a key-ring.

This tutorial demonstrates the basic of lanyard/scoubidou weaving. Try it for yourself!

Tools
  • 1 x scissors
  • 1 x nail-cutter
  • 1 x cigarette lighter
Materials
  • Lanyard threads of different colors
    NB: the most common are plastic, round and hollow.

Basic principles of making lanyards

  • Lanyard-making consists of tieing the threads together and weaving.
  • The final size of a lanyard will be around 4 times smaller. The more thread there is, the smaller the final size will be.
  • To finish a lanyard, melt the stumps (without burning them) and quickly stick them together.
