Sand craft

Sand craft Kids crafts: colored sand craft

To create designs with colored sand you can follow the classic method with vinyl glue but you can also buy self-adhesive card. Of course, this makes things slightly more expensive, but it is more suitable for small children as it makes the task of covering the design with colored sand much easier for them. Why not try both methods of sand craft and see which one works better for you?

Supplies
Tools
  • Pair of scissors
  • Stanley Knife
Materials
  • Adhesive card or Polyphane
    • Fine and supple piece of card which has a self-adhesive side with a fine film of protection (around 0.80€/1.15USD for one piece of card)
    • There is also card which has designs already drawn and cut out on it, this is recommended for small children (around 3€/4.30 USD for one piece of card.
  • Coloured Sand (around 3.50€ for 100 / 5USD for 3.5oz)
  • Optional: Hairspray or spray varnish for a shinier finish and a better adhesion of the sand.
  • 1 ordinary sheet of A4 paper
Directions

Prepare the card for sand craft

  • Remove the protective film from the polyphane card. You will see that this results in a smooth surface, easily detached from the adhesive card.
  • Cut out your chosen designs from this same protective film..
  • Put the designs on the adhesive card, with the smooth side on the bottom.

NB: if you make a mistake with this, you will not be able to remove your designs.

  • In order to ensure that your designs are well stuck on to the card, use what is left of the protective film. Put it on the adhesive card, smooth side down and press down firmly.

  • Lay your card on the sheet of A4 paper folded in two along the length. This will be used to catch the leftover sand.

Add colored sand to make your sand craft

  • Sprinkle your sand generously on to the adhesive area.
  • Press the sand down firmly with your fingers so that it sticks well.

  • Shake the sand off on to the bottom of the A4 page.

  • Pour the surplus sand into the pot. To do this, pour the sand slowly along the fold of the page.
  • Take off the design motifs one by one with the help of a Stanley Knife and recover the hidden surface with your chosen colour of sand.

Alternative

A variation of the method above involves uncovering the adhesive part of the card gradually.  To do this delicately cut the protective film with a Stanley knife according to surfaces that you want to recover with sand. Following on from this, the principle is the same: sprinkle the uncovered zone with sand, press down on the sand, and remove the excess. Here the main difficulty lies in the not making an incision with the Stanley knife as you risk piercing the sheet!
