Craft with kids: Woven table set tutorial

Small and dexterous hands will love weaving paper to create table sets. After having cut out a small dozen strips of each color, it’s by following this simple over-and-under technique that children will be able to weave table sets or desk-blotters. They can be made impermeable by being encased in plastic film and can be washed with a sponge.

Supplies
Tools
  • Scissors
  • A Stanley knife
Materials
  • 3 sheets of carded paper in A3 format (29 x 42 cm – 11.4 x 16.5 inches). Each sheet should be of a different color.
  • Glue
  • Adhesive
  • Transparent film (e.g. textbook protective film)
Directions

For 2 table sets – 26 x 34 cm (10.2 x 13.4 inches).

Preparing the weaving materials

  • Cut out:
    • 7 strips of light blue - 2 x 34 cm (0.8 x 13.4 inches),
    • 9 strips of pink (or yellow) - 2 x 26 cm (0.8 x 10.2 inches),
    • 8 strips of dark blue - 2 x 26 cm (0.8 x 10.2 inches).
  • Stick a blue strip perpendicular to a pink one by their extremities.

  • Stick the other blue strips, by spacing them out by 2 centimeters (0.8 inches) as you did previously, sticking them alternating between one above and one below the pink strip. The 7th blue strip should be stuck to the other extremity of the pink strip.

Weaving

  • Ask the child to weave the strips, alternating the colors and their position, once above, once below.

  • Stick the extremities of the strips on the first and last blue strip.

  • Cut off the excess paper along the blue strips.

Finishing touches for the table set

  • Cut two rectangles – 26 x 24 cm (10.2 x 9.4 inches) – in transparent plastic film for each table set.

  • Position each set between two transparent rectangles and fix them with strips of adhesive tape.

  • Cut off the excess tape on each corner.
