Free sewing pattern for a draped open-back dress

Here’s a beautiful jersey summer dress, modelled by EmilyJolie. This template shows how to make a jersey open-back and draped dress. See how the male of the species react to this dress!

  • Jersey fabric
  • Matching thread
Directions

Pattern

  • Fold the fabric in half and cut out the two following pieces:

NB: the wider the top of the front piece is (here 25 x 2 cm/10 x 0.8 inches), the more the collar will drape.

  • Put the two pieces together right side out and pin together the edges following the dots.

Putting the open-back dress together

  • Sew the 2 pieces together at about 1 cm (0.4 inches) leaving an opening of 2.5 cm (1 inch) for the armholes.
  • Turn the dress inside out and try it on.
  • Cut out an opening in the back.
  • Sew on 2 straps at the top of the opening.

Tips
  • The measurements provided on the template are for a Size 38 (US Size 6), but as jersey is a stretchable fabric, they could be used for a Size 40 (US Size 8).

  • With jersey fabric, it isn’t necessary to put in hems, but you should always sew with zig-zag stitches or with a forward stitch and pulling on the fabric in order to keep the elasticity of the dress.
