Lucky daruma doll Free craft tutorial

The Japanese lucky daruma doll, a popular gift of encouragement and good fortune, is a representation of the founder of Zen Buddhism, Bodhidharma. The paper mâché creation is weighted so that it will always come back to sitting when knocked over, and is traditionally painted as a bearded red figure with no eyes. The recipient of the doll draws in one eye while making a wish or deciding a goal, and fills the other eye in once that wish or goal is fulfilled. The lucky daruma doll is a creative and fun way of wishing your loved ones good luck!

Make the lucky daruma doll base

  • Create a round, heavy-bottomed shape by filling a plastic egg with a few stones and covering it in paper-mâché.
  • Build up the paper-mâché and incorporate a sunken, flat surface for the face.
  • Form a small protruding triangle for the nose.
  • Allow the paper-mâché to dry.

Paint the lucky daruma doll

  • Paint the sunken face with a flesh color, and the body with red.
  • Allow the base paint to dry.
  • Paint two larges white eyes onto the face, but do not paint the pupils.
  • Create eyebrows, a moustache and beard using black paint.
  • Add decorative details with gold, green, white and black paint.
  • If you like, paint your name on the doll's chin.
  • Paint in one pupil while thinking of your wish or goal. Paint the other one in only when that wish or goal is fulfilled.

Tips
  • Instead of a plastic egg for the base of the doll, a small blown-up balloon can be used. Once a rigid, dry paper-mâché case has been formed around the balloon, a small hole is made at the top. Through this hole partly fill the doll with plaster to act as a weight, and then cover the hole with more layers of paper-mâché.
