Skirt Pattern How to...make a skirt pattern!

It’s essential to have a sewing pattern to create a skirt.  Or maybe not!  With this tutorial a quarter of a circle is enough to make a stylish pattern free skirt!

Supplies
Tools
Materials
  • Fabric with lycra or spandex (cotton jersey used here);
  • About 40 inches of 1.5 inch wide elasticized border for waistband;
  • Pattern;
  • Matching thread.
Directions

Measure the simple skirt pattern

  • You have 2 options when making a skirt.The first option to create the pattern is as follows:
    • Calculate R: the radius of the arc, R = waist measurement divided by (0.5 x 3.14)
    • The other variable, L is the length of the skirt;
    • Create the pattern using these measurements;
    • Trace at right angles 2 x the radius R (or diameter D) to obtain a quarter of a circle (it’s not as difficult as it sounds- see the photo!);
    • Draw the arc using a thread the length of the radius R. Hold one end firmly in the right corner of A and B and use this to mark a line- this marks the waist of the skirt;
    • Mark the desired skirt length (L) on the paper- here we’ve used 19 inches;
    • As previously, draw the arc between C and D to mark the bottom of the skirt.
  • Alternatively you could enlarge the pattern shown which is at 1/6th.  The pattern shown is a small size 4.   The patterns are drawn to scale, 2 squares = 2.4 inches (6 cm).

    Size    Waist size      R ¼ circle      R ½ circle      1=2.4 in          1=1.6 in

    4             24.5 in            16 in               8 in                 6.7                  5.0

    6             26.5 in            17 in               8.5 in              7.1                  5.3

    8             28 in               18 in               9 in                 7.5                   5.7

    10           29.5 in            19 in                9.5 in              8.0                   6.0

    12           31 in               20 in                10 in               8.4                   6.3

Make the pattern of the simple skirt

  • To trace the waist line, attach the pencil to a thread or ribbon at the length shown in the table (for example, for the size 6 we’ve used a length of 42.7 cm).

  •

    Hold with your finger at the centre of the circle and mark the waist.

  •

    Choose the length of your skirt (here we’ve used 20 inches) and mark in the same manner.

Assemble the pattern free skirt

  • Place the center of the pattern you have made on the bias of the fabric.

  • Cut 4 pieces.
  • Sew the back seam.
  • Overlock the cut edges.
  • Using the elastic (or zig-zag) setting on the sewing machine, stitch on the waistband.

  • Ease the fabric to fit.
