Kids' Oven How to make a cardboard oven for kids

The kids are playing "House" and need an oven for their kitchen, what do you do? Well, this tutorial will show you how to make a kisd' oven using cardboard and bottletops yourself!

Supplies
Tools
  • Pair of scissors
  • Glue gun
  • Punch (or any other pointed objet)
  • Cutter
  • Cutting mat
  • Brush
Materials
  • A box about 47cm x 28cm x 24.5cm.
  • 6 plastic caps, preferably 2 different types: 2 for the dials on the oven and 4 for the hotplates.
  • 1 or 2 big plastic caps (milk bottle tops) which will act as the handle for plate-warming drawer of the oven and the oven itself.
  • An extra box, preferably double-grooved for the outter parts and the plate-warming drawer.
  • Tissue paper and/or paint.
  • Strong glue (preferably non-solvent).
  • Varnish-glue (if you are using tissue paper) or standard varnish.
  • Strips of masking tape.
  • Split pins.
  • A piece of transparent and quite strong plastic 14cm x 12 cm to make the glass on the door with.
Directions

The base of the kids' oven

  • Cut out the door shape and a rectangle for the drawer on the front of your box, following exactly the diagrams in picture 1.
  • Put aside the rectangle you have cut for the drawer underneath.
  • Create the inside part of the oven from the second box, following the dimensions of image 2.
  • Attach the transparent plastic to the inside of the door.
  • Stick everything together by putting box from image 2 inside of the door.
  • Use the strips of masking tape to cover up the edges, so that you can't see the grooves of the cardboard.

Make the draw for the kids' oven

  • Cut out the drawer cache from the second box, following image 3.
  • Cut out the different parts of the drawer, following the dimensions in image 5.

NB: For the front of the drawer, use the piece of cardboard you cut out previously and left aside.

  • Assemble everything and then stick it all together.
  • Add the drawer cache from image 3 on the front of the drawer.
  • Stick everything together.
  • Stick on the top that will act as the knob.
  • Cut out from the cardboard the struts shown in image 4, following their exact dimensions.
  • Stick them as shown. The struts will act to reenforce the base and create the different sections for the oven and the drawer.

Buttons of the kids' oven

  • Place the caps on the box following image 6.
  • Make several circles of card that are the same diameter as the caps.
  • Pierce them through the center so you can pass a split pin through them.
  • Attach the different parts as shown in the image, sticking everything down as you go along.
  • Push the split pin through the front of the oven that you have pierced beforehand.

Hotplates of the kids' oven

  • Cut out different pieces of cardboard, following the dimensions of image 7.
  • Make them double-thick if necessary.

Finishing touches to the kids' oven:

  • Cover the entire thing in tissue paper or paint it.
  • Apply at least 2 coats of varnish.
  • Print out and use these shapes below to decorate your oven with.
    • borders,
    • hot plates,
    • flowers to decorate the sides.

Tips
  • Use non-solvent flour paste to stick down the tissue paper.
