All you need is some left-over fabric to make this adorable item of clothing for your favorite little girl. This Grecian-style top is both a traditional and practical garment for children, which can also be lengthened to make a dress.

You could make the top in every color of the rainbow for her friends too!

 

Supplies
Tools
  • Sewing machine
  • Scissors
  • Needle 
Materials
  • Rectangle of fabric 34 cm x 110 cm (13.6 inches x 44 inches) (for the top)
  •  2 rectangles of fabric 6 cm x 20 cm (3.4 inches x 8 inches) (for the straps)
  • 3 buttons
  • Thread

Dimensions for a 4 year old girl

Main section of the Grecian style top

  • Put a hem along the top and the bottom of the fabric, 1 cm away from the edge.
  • Turn in the hem twice on the width of the top at 1 cm for the finish.
  • Make the buttonholes on one of the hems at: 3, 1.7 and 13 cm (1.2, 0.68, 5.2 inches) from the top of the blouse.
  • Sew the buttons onto the other hem.
  • Create/insert 2 smockings on the top of the dress:
    • the 1st at 5 mm (0.19 inches) from the top hem.
    • the other at 10 mm (0.39 inches) from the top hem. 

Straps of the Grecian style top

  • Stitch all along the width of the straps.
  • Overlock and turn the fabric round.
  • Repeat this action so that the seam is in the middle.
  • Sew one end of one of the straps 5 cm (2 inches) from the edge of the back of the blouse, with the seam on the inside of the blouse:
    • sew the other end at 19 cm (7-3/5 inches) from the edge.

 

  • Follow the same steps for the other straps.
