Piggy Bank Free craft tutorial

If your children don’t know what to do with their pocket money, these fun and easy instructions for a piggy bank will help them save up some money for a rainy day. Making this piggy bank will also give them a chance to enjoy themselves and express their creativity.

Supplies
Tools
  • Scissors
  • Bowl
  • Knife
  • Cutter
  • Medium-sized paintbrush
  • Fine paintbrush
  • Black marker
Materials
  • Balloon
  • 3 rolls of plaster strips
  • 4 wine corks
  • Cork 5cm in diameter
  • PVA glue
  • White cotton balls
  • Thick wire
  • Pink, fuschia and beige acrylic paint.
Directions

Make the body of the piggy bank

  • Inflate the balloon to the size you want, tie in a knot and hang it up.
  • Fill a bowl with lukewarm water.
  • Soak the plaster strips in the water and cover the balloon in two layers of plaster, as in the diagram below.
  • Leave it to dry.
  • Deflate the balloon and remove it.
  • Apply a third layer of plaster strips.

Assemble the parts of the piggy bank

  • Using a knife, make four holes on the bottom of the pig’s body, when the plaster stripes are solid but still damp.
  • Insert the corks into the holes, pushing them in until they are just over half-way into the body.
  • Stick the big cork on the front to make the snout.

  • For the ears:
    • Cut two squares out of a plaster strip and fold them into triangles.
    • Soak them in the water, position them on the pig’s body and then hold them for several minutes to create the shape you want.
  • Cover the trotters and the snout in two layers of plaster strips.
  • With the cutter, make the slot for the coins.
  • Leave to dry for 24 hours.

Finishing touches to the piggy bank

  • Twist a piece of wire into a spiral and attach it to make the pig’s corkscrew tail.
  • Using the medium painbrush, paint the whole piggy bank pink.
  • Using the fine paintbrush, paint:
    • the nostrils and inside of the ears in fuchsia.
    • the trotters in beige.

  • Cut with a cutter the cotton ball to make the eyes.

  • Draw pupils on the eyes with the black felt tip pen and then attach them above the snout with a tiny amount of glue.

  • Under the money box, make an opening that you will be able to close with a cork.
