Start the school year in style with this lovely fabric pencil case. If school days are far behind you, why not use it as a funky make-up bag? You can match it to your bag and recycle your scraps of fabric! 

This pencil case is made entirely of cotton, and with its compactness and zip fastening, it's really pracitcal too.

Materials
  • Fabric for the exterior and the lining (2 rectangles of 22 cm x 28 cm (9 inches x 11 inches))
  • 20 cm zipper (8 inches)
Directions

Attach the zipper to the pencil case fabric

  • Place one rectangle on top of the other, with the right sides facing each other..

  • Put the zipper in place:
    • on the short side of the rectangles
    • between the two pieces of fabric
    • edge to edge with the rectangles (the zipper will no longer be visible).
    • with the zipper facing in the same direction as the right side of the exterior fabric.

  • *The right sides of the fabric are touching.
  • *Lay the 3 pieces on top of each other, lining up the edges.
  • *The right side of the zip faces the exterior fabric.
     
  • Pin and stitch the fabric.
  • Fold the fabric over and iron.
  • Flatten it out by folding the two pieces of fabric along the middle, with the zipper in the centre.

  • Pin and stitch together the long sides of the rectangles, leaving a space of approx. 6 cm (2-1/2 inches) between A and B in the lining to turn the pencil case the right way round.

Finish the pencil case

  • Open the zip before you start to sew.

NB : open the zip before sewing up the sides or you will not be able to turn the case the right way round.

  • Turn the pencil case the right way round.
  • Close the opening in the lining with tiny invisible stitches.
