Supplies
Tools
Materials
  • About 60 x 140 cm (24 x 55 inches) of cotton or jersey cloth with black and white (or black and red) vertical stripes
  • 10 to 12 cm (4 or 5 inches) of flat elastic
  • 47 cm (20 inches) of flat elastic for the waist
  • Matching thread
Directions

Prepare the pant legs for the pirate pants

  • Download and print the pattern for pirate pant-legs.

NB: Scale: 1 small square = 5 mm (1/5 inches)

  • Cut the cloth according to the pattern.

NB : Allow 1 cm (1/2 inch) of margin for sewing.

Legs of the pirate pants

  • Sew over the lower edges of one pant leg with a whipstitch or a very tight zigzag stitch.

  • Close the pant leg and sew up the inseam with a whipstitch from the bottom to the crotch.

  • Do the same for the other pant leg.

Put the pirate pants together

  • Place one leg inside the other so that the seams line up. Make sure the front and back parts of the crotch coincide.

  • Pin the legs together where they will join.

  • Sew up the length of the crotch so that the seam is strong and tight. Sew with a whip stitch.

Waist of the pirate pants

  • Fold over the top of the pants to form a tube (casing for the drawstring) about 2 cm (1 inch) high.

  • Pin and sew along the bottom of the fold, leaving an opening about 2 or 3 cm (1 or 1 ½ inches) wide to put in the elastic.

  • Pass the elastic - about 47 cm (20 inches) counting the seam – around the waist with the help of a safety pin.

  • Sew the ends of the elastic together solidly.

  • Finish sewing the waist with some backstitching.

Tips
  • Pin or baste the fabric with a loose running stitch if it is difficult to sew before you make the garment.

  • To easily find the back of the pants, sew a mark or draw one with permanent marker..
