Car-crazy kids will love this "Cars" cake! A mixture of chocolate and yoghurt cakes provides a yummy base, and cookies and marzipan help Mater the Tow Truck take shape.

Supplies
Tools
  • Rectangular cake tins to create the structure of the car.
  • Small round tins to make the wheels (for example chocolate sucker molds. If you can’t find these perhaps try large round cookie molds).
  • Oven
  • Bain-marie (or just saucepans).
Materials
  • Sugar paste
  • Marzipan, in green and white
  • Strawberry jelly (strawberry jam for English people!)
  • Powdered food coloring (coffee brown color)
  • Mikado cookies (or chocolate straw-shaped biscuits)
  • Cola laces
  • 1 carambar (or a finger-sized stick of taffy)
  • Chocolate
  • 1 yellow gummy candy
  • 2 red plain M&Ms
Directions

Base of your "Cars" cake

  • Bake a basic yoghurt cake.
  • Bake a basic chocolate cake.
  • Divide the two cakes into pieces.
  • Arrange the pieces to form the structure of the car.
  • When you are happy with the car shape, stick the pieces together with strawberry jam.

Decorate your "Cars" cake

  • Add the food coloring to the sugar paste to get the color you want.

  • Roll out the sugar paste and cover the car with it.

Accesories for your "Cars" cake 

  • Melt the chocolate in a saucepan in a bain-marie (or just using a saucepan of boiling water).
    • The chocolate will serve as glue.
    • The bain-marie (or water bath) helps to keep it at the right temperature to use when needed.
  • Make a winch from the Mikados, and weld together with the chocolate.
  • Create a cable from the candy cola laces.
  • Bend the Carambar into a hook shape and tie onto the cable.
  • Make the chocolate wheels:
    • Fill the small round molds with chocolate.
    • Allow to cool thoroughly before removing from the molds.
  • Assemble the winch, cable, hook and wheels onto the truck as shown.
  • Stick the yellow candy on top of the cake for the flashing light.
  • Add sugar paste hubcaps.

  • Roll out the green and white marzipan and cut door, window and mirror shapes as shown in the pictures.

  • Fashion teeth, eyes and left headlamp from the white marzipan.

  • Make the grille for the rear of the truck from the green marzipan.
  • Using the melted chocolate, pipe a design onto the grille.
  • Also pipe a number onto the door and pupils for the eyes.
  • Press the M&Ms into the sugar paste above the grille for tail lights.
  • Your car cake is now ready - enjoy!
