Moneybox Free DIY project

Amaze your children with this Hansel and Gretel moneybox: use fimo clay to make this candy-covered cottage and transform their piggy bank into a fairy tale!

If your child can’t manage to make the moneybox by themselves, they can still let their creativity flow by helping to decorate the house.

The only disadvantage is that you will need lots of polymer modeling clay (Fimo) to cover the whole house, which can make the project quite expensive.

Supplies
Tools
  • Craft knife (cutter)
  • Oven
  • Pasta-making machine/rolling pin
  • Paintbrush for applying varnish
  • White glue
  • Varnish
Materials
  • For the house
    • Empty milk carton (our carton has a base of about 7x7cm)
    • Cardboard
    • Metal sheet (e.g. from an old box), a little larger than the bottom of the milk carton
  • Various colours of Fimo (caramel-coloured is particularly useful)
  • Liquid Fimo
  • Sesame seeds
  • Cotton wool
  • Green felt (to cover the metal base)
  • Magnetic strips.
Directions

Make the base of your moneybox

  • Using the craft knife, cut through milk carton, at about 6cm from the top of the carton. Keep the triangular top section (to make the roof of the house).

Decorate your moneybox

  • Walls of the gingerbread house:

    • Roll out a piece of caramel-coloured fimo clay to make a smooth rectangle shape (use a pasta-maker or a rolling pin.)
    • Cover the 4 sides of the milk carton with this sheet of Fimo (but not the roof.) NB: make sure the surface is nice and smooth, with no holes or tears.
    • Place this in the oven for 5-6 minutes at 130°.
  • Other decorations:

    • Make a door and windows with fimo clay.
    • Make lots of different kinds of candy with the fimo clay: candy canes, liquorice, biscuits, chocolate ...
    • Make the sticks for cotton candy (you will add the cotton wool at the end.)'épices - activités manuelles - loisirs créatifs - tutoriels gratuits

Roof of the moneybox

  • Mix caramel-coloured and yellow fimo clay until you have a uniform colour. (Alternatively, you could opt for white fimo, for a snow-covered roof.)
  • Roll out the fimo clay to make a sheet of fimo (with the pasta-maker or a rolling pin.)
  • Put it in the oven for a few minutes.
  • With a little cookie cutter, cut out biscuit-shapes.
  • Stick the biscuit-shapes onto the roof with liquid Fimo.

  • Warm the whole thing in the oven following the Fimo manufacturer’s instructions..

Finishing touches of the moneybox

  • Make the nougat chimney with a cube of white fimo clay, sesame seeds and small bits of chocolate-coloured fimo.
  • Make sugared almonds with the fimo clay for the top of the roof.

  • Place the house in the oven for 15 minutes at around 130° (check Fimo manufacturer’s instructions.)

  • Leave to cool.

  • Apply a coat of varnish.

  • Add a bit of cotton wool to the cotton candy sticks to make cotton candy trees.

Base of your moneybox

  • The idea is that the money can be easily removed once the money box is full, without breaking the box.

  • Cut a square opening 3x3cm in the bottom of the house, but only cutting open 3 sides of the square.
