Newsboy cap Free sewing pattern

This newsboy cap pattern is ideal for those who love stylish headgear. A practical hat that can be worn by guys and girls alike.

Supplies
Tools
  • Sewing kit
  • Sewing machine
Materials
  • 60 x 50 cm (24 x 20 inches) relatively thick woolen fabric
  • 60 x 50 cm (24 x 20 inches) lining fabric
  • Plastic ring binder (or other water-resistant material)
  • Matching button
  • Matching thread
Directions

For a cap with a head circumference of about 56/57 cm (22 inches).

Cut out the parts of the newsboy cap

  • Download the patterns:
    • The "head" of the cap (A4 format).
    • The visor (A4 format).

  • Fold the 2 sheets of fabric in half.
  • Cut the 3 sections of the ‘head’ out of each sheet of fabric. You should end up with 12 pieces.

  • For the visor cut two pieces out of the fabric and one out of the ring binder.

  • Cover a button with the same fabric (or get it done).

Assemble the newsboy cap

  • Assemble the 6 sections of the head part of the hat, sewing the sides together one after the other, joining the front side of the fabric.
  • Do the same with the lining.
  • Assemble the two pieces of the visor, sewing together the front side of the fabric at the larger curved edge.
  • Attach the visor to the cap using only one layer of the fabric, still joining the front side of the fabric.
  • Turn the visor over and slide the plastic support inside.
  • Put the lining inside the cap, joining the reverse sides of the fabric, and pin it by folding the edges over towards the inside and making sure to pass the two layers of the visor between the hat and lining.
  • Sew the whole thing together.
  • Sew the button on top to hide the unsightly hole where the sections fit together, making sure to keep the fabric and lining together.

Tips
  • For a smaller head size, add a strip of elastic to the back once you have assembled the hat.
  • To make it easier, place the pins perpendicular to the edge when you are assembling the hat as they interfere less with the stitching. Remove them as soon as you have sewn the pieces together.
