Coffee Table  How to make a cable drum coffee table

If you get the chance to wonder through a building site, make sure you don't go back empty-handed: carry off a cable drum which can easily be transformed into a collector's coffee table.

Supplies
Tools
  • Large paint brush (for the glue)
  • Ruler
  • Sponge
Materials
  • Cable drum (electrician's cable reel available in different diameters)
  • Newspaper (or scrap paper)
  • Magazines (or similar) to decorate
  • Varnish glue
  • Water
  • Washing-up liquid
Directions
  • A cable drum can often be found free of charge.
  • Clean it with the water and washing-up liquid.
  • Decide on a theme for its decoration, 50s magazines, or comic theme, for example.
  • Cut up the newspaper.
  • Spread the varnish glue over the cable drum and the newspaper.
  • Stick down a base layer of newspaper, removing any air bubbles with fingers, or a ruler.

 

 

  • Using a craft knife, trim the ends around the edges and open out the holes. (the cable drums surface is holey).

 

  • Using the varnish glue, stick down your magazine clippings or photos.
  • Allow it to dry.
  • Add a final layer of varnish (to allow it to be wiped clean) and let it dry.
