Crochet Scarf How to make a crochet scarf

Wrapping up warm in a beautifully bright crochet scarf will lighten those winter days! Joining up tiny crochet squares is so easy, a kid's game and you'll just want to make more of these floppy scarves for your loved ones. So creative!

Supplies
Tools
  • Darning needle
  • Size 5 crochet hook.
Materials
  • 4-ply yarn (thinner than the yarn used for making the squares).
Directions
  • Create approximatly 200 crochet squares. See how to make crochet squares.
  • Take all the crochet colour squares you have made, alternating the colours.

  • Start joining them by using the ladder stitch, following the step by step instructions.

  • Line the squares up row by row of 4 squares and thread your needle with some yarn.

  • Start to sew up the centre of the middle two rows of squares.

  • Take the square with the front side facing up. Put the needle through the right hand corner.

  • Take hold of the next square (in the next row) to the left. Take the needle up through the bar in the bottom right end side of the square.

  • Take your needle up and through the bar in the chain that is bottom right hand of your square.

  • Take your needle through and up the side of the chain on the edge of the next stitch of your right hand square (the first one you worked into).

  • Take your yarn up and through the edge of the chain stitch above the last one you went through in your second square.

  • Take your yarn up again and through the edge of the chain stitch.

  • Repeat the instructions along the sides of your squares until you reach the top of each side.

  • Follow the instructions to make the stitches invisible.

  • Take hold of the yarn hanging out the bottom of your "ladder", running up the middle of you two squares. Hold firmly and start pulling gently.

  • The ladder disappears.

  • Carry on joining the squares, repeating stages 1 to 5.

  • Do exactly what you did with the first two squares, until you get to the top of your next set of squares.

  • Pull to make the stitches invisible.

  • Make sure the bottom part of the yarn is held firmly in place.

  • This way, you have formed another row.

  • Here is how to put together a small section of the square scarf.

  • Start on the outer rows of the scarf.

  • Just follow stages 1 to 5 as you did in the middle row.

  • The scarf is four square wide and the outer squares are only sewn on one side.

  • To allow them to be flappy.

  • Start and finish with the middle two squares only.

  • Repeat stages 1 to 5, starting at the edge of the second square in.

  • Carry on to the edge of the next square, finishing there. Pulling to make the stitches invisible.

  • The scarf is complete with its flappy edges.
