Bin Monster How to make a bin monster

Who says waste bins need to be boring?  Try making an original recepticle to put in a child's bedroom or bathroom!  All it takes is a sunny weekend, paper mâché, Scotch tape, paint and a dose of good humored fun to create this unique monster waste bin.

Supplies
Tools
  • Bucket filled with hot water
  • Paint brushes
Materials
  • Newspaper
  • Fabric glue
  • Thick, sturdy tape
  • Acrylic paint
  • Varnish
Directions

Body of the Waste Bin

  • Open the pageds of the newspaper journal.

  • Make twos tacks of 5 pages and fold them in half.

  • Using the thick tape, stick the twos tacks together to create a cube.

  • Put the paper on top of the cube like a lid.

  • Tape them down.

  • The result of that process should look like this :

  • Make at least two rolls of 4 pages of newspaper each (see below).

  • Tape them to the top of the body of the bin.

  • Scrunch 6 pages of newspaper into balls and wrap them up tight with tape.

  • Tape them onto the top of the bin (these will make the eyes).

Addition of the Papier Mache

  • Make the mixture by following a recipe. NOTE: The mixture must be thick.
  • Tear long strips of newspaper.

  • Dunk the strips of newspaper into the mixture.

  • Apply them to the body of the trash can.

  • Repeat the action until the whole body is covered.  Start with the top and the inside without forgetting the eyes.
  • Let dry.
  • Repeat again, this time covering the floor of the bin.

  • Leave it to dry for at least one day.

  • The paper will harden but remain light.

Painting the waste bin

  • Use acrylic paint (gouache will not stick well).  Feel free to follow the model above or create your own design and your own colors.
  • Add several layers of paint if necessary.
  • Leave it to dry.
  • Cover it with varnish to protect it from water and wear.
