How to Make a Harry Potter Wand
from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit
- Cut a stick from a tree and make sure it is appropiate length and thickness. (See Tips for more on this.)
- Whittle the stick with a knife, taking care to make it thinner toward the end.
- Cover the thicker end with clay, and make sure that about 3 inches of the wood is covered.
- While the clay is still somewhat firm, but not completely dry, make it your own by carving patterns into it, shaping it into things like leaves or vines, or adding adornments like beads and jewels.
- Let the clay dry for the appropriate length of time. (The package the clay came in should give this information.)
- Use varnish on the part of the wood that is not covered by clay to make it bright and shiny.
Warnings
- Be careful, especially while whittling with the knife.
- Use rubber gloves as the varnish can damage surfaces and clothing.
- Apply the varnish in an open area as it may have dangerous fumes.
- Always supervise children with this activity.
Tips
-
Wands are usually between 8 and 16 inches in length. Any shorter and the wand will just look too short, any longer will make it look more like a short staff than a wand.
-
Use your own judgment to determine a good thickness for the wand. It should feel comfortable in your hand, but not be so thin it snaps easily.
