from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

  1. Wear an old black robe. These are often found in hire stores for academic ceremonies - ask them if they have old ones they will sell cheaply for costume purposes. Or, try a thrift or charity store. If you have a lawyer or academic in the family, ask them if you can borrow their black robe! If you can't find one, borrow a long black skirt, or purchase a really large one from a thrift or charity store or look in a department store for a cheap one.
  2. Find any pair of glasses. Again, used clothing stores are a good place to find these. Put sello-tape (scotch tape, called sellotape in Britain) on the middle of your glasses.
  3. Find a red and gold scarf. Ask a friend or family member to knit one if you can't find one. Another solution is to use a plain red scarf and wrap yellow ribbon around it (sew or staple in place) to create a striped effect (or red ribbon on yellow scarf).
  4. Use a red lipliner/lipstick or a non-toxic, washable marker to draw the famous lightning bolt on your forehead.
  5. If you have a fake white owl, feel free to carry it with you. Look in the toy section of department or charity stores.
  6. Use any stick like a chopstick, twig, piece of bamboo, or pencil (tape two pencils together to make it an official length) as a wand.

Warnings

  • Feathers from birds might give you disease.
  • be sure your marker isn't toxic or drawing on your self
Tips
  • If you are playing the character for Halloween, or a fancy dress party, point at people and say, "Expelliarmius!", "Wingardium Leviosa!", or another similar Harry Potter phrase.

  • Read the Harry Potter books (and watch the movies) to get a better idea of what he's like.

  • Wear a pointy hat if wished. Harry's distinguishing feature, however, is really his scar, so that is more important than a hat.

  • For extra props tape a feather onto a pen/pencil to make it look like a quill or go buy parchment from an art store and use it to write things on 'parchment'. In some gift shops they sell quill-pens also in case you can't use real feathers.
