Steps

  1. Take a big piece of bulletin paper (or newspaper) and draw a perfect square on it.
  2. Cut out the square using scissors or an art knife.
  3. Rotate the paper so it looks like a diamond and fold from one side to the other.
  4. Open the paper and place your wooden dowel vertically on the fold line.
  5. Place another dowel horizontally on top of the first dowel in the center of the paper.
  6. Secure these together with some tape.
  7. Place dowels along the edges and tape them securely to the paper.
  8. Cut off all the excess paper.
  9. When that is done, reinforce the kite by adding more tape to the edges and center of the kite.
  10. Make two holes with the vertical dowel in the middle, above the center point.
  11. Repeat step 10 but make the two holes below the center line.
  12. Feed a string through both sets of holes and tie them together so it makes the keel of the kite.
  13. Tie the long string to the keel and your kite is ready to fly. You should be able to get keels from any art shop.

Tips
  • Do not try flying the kite in the rain, as the paper may tear.
  • Pay attention to the weather; you don't want to be struck by lightning!
  • The larger your paper, the better the kite flies.
  • Try using lightweight materials on your kite to make it as light as possible. Trash bags make cheap, light, and strong kites.
  • Use a strip of cloth or tape attached to the bottom of the kite to make a tail for the kite. This helps the kite to fly with added stability. (bowe the vertical cross stick back with string)
