Placemats Kitchen Project: how to make placemats

Ever wanted spill-proof placemats that look a little more mature than Mickey Mouse? Blair at Wise Craft shares her tutorial on how to make placemats out of fabric to show off your personal style—and then laminate them to make them last for years to come.

Supplies
Tools
  • Iron
  • Laminating machine (available for use at most office supply stores)
Materials

for 4 placemats:

  • 2 styles of fabric, 1 meter (1 yard) each
  • 1 meter (1 yard) fusible webbing
Directions
  • Cut out 4 rectangles measuring 28 x 43 cm (11 x 17 inches) from each type of fabric.
  • Cut out 4 rectangles measuring 28 x 43 cm (11 x 17 inches) from the fusible webbing
  • Iron 1 rectangle smooth, right side down.
  • Position fusible webbing on back of rectangle.
  • Follow webbing manufacturer’s instructions for ironing webbing onto fabric.
! - Be careful not to get webbing on ironing board or on iron.
  • Allow to cool.
  • Peel off backing of fusible webbing.
  • Iron 1 rectangle of second type of fabric smooth.
  • Position this rectangle on top of the fusible webbing, right side facing out.
  • Iron second type of fabric to activate fusible webbing and fuse it to the first fabric.
  • Trim placemat to 26 x 41 cm (10-1/4 x 16-1/4 inches).
  • Laminate placemat.
! - You only need to laminate it once, but run it through the machine 2 times to make sure all sides seal properly.
