Board Game Travel Fun for kids: How to make a horse board game

The French game of Little Horses is similar to Parcheesi. With this tutorial, you can make a travel version of this great horse board game. Even little children can help make (and then play!) this game - fun for all the family!

Supplies
Tools
  • Sewing kit
  • Crayons
  • Oven
  • Embroidery needle
  • Sewing machine (optional)
Materials
  • 2 squares of cotton fabric, 40-cm (15-3/4-inch) sides (for the game board and lining)
  • Bias tape (for the border)
  • Embroidery floss: blue, green, yellow, and red
  • Shrink plastic (or Fimo clay or air drying clay or salt dough)
  • 8 buttons for the bases
  • Matching thread
  • Strong glue
  • Aluminum foil
  • Fabric-friendly carbon paper (optional)
Directions

Make the board for the board game

  • Draw a square, measuring 3 cm (1-3/16 inches) in from the fabric at each side, using a fabric pencil.
  • Draw a 14-cm (5-1/2-inch) square at each of the 4 corners of this square (or line up the template below along the left edge and trace).
  • Trace a horse at the center of each stable (each of the 4 squares) using carbon paper (or sketch freehand).
  • Draw all the little squares about 1 cm (3/8 inch) apart.
NB. The template here uses actual measurements.

  • Embroider everything with a stem stitch (or by machine).

  • Iron the 2 game board fabrics.
  • Sew them together, wrong sides together, and sew bias tape around the edges.

Make the counters for the board game

  • Carve 8 little horse heads from the shrink plastic.
  • Or trace 8 little horse heads on the shrink plastic from a coloring book.
! - The shrink plastic shrinks 7 times smaller when cooked.
  • Color the horse heads (2 red, 2 green, etc.) with crayon.

  • Place them on aluminum foil and cook them in the oven at 175°C (350°F) for 8 minutes.
! - The shrink plastic visibly contorts and shrinks.
  • When the plastic flattens again, take it out of the oven and press it between the pages of a large book while it's still hot.
  • Glue the base of the head to the buttons.

  • Make a fabric carrying case to store it.

Tips
  • To make your little horses game more quickly, draw the squares with a felt-tip pen on 3D fabric.

Incognito :

I went to Vietnam on a vacation and we went to see my friends' family. They entertained us by teaching us to play "Horses" and the board is exactly like that first picture you've got there except that there aren't creatures in the corners but Horses.
