This is an effective way of personalizing and adding finishing touches to a sewing project.

Directions

Prepare the fabric for the collared T shirt

  • Wash and iron the fabrics.
  • Cut the fabrics into the pieces required for the top of the tunic:
    • yoke: the back and the 2 front sides
    • 3 collar pieces: 1 back and 2 fronts

  • Assemble the shoulder-level pieces and sew them together.

  • Iron the outside edges of the collar to prepare for the hem joining the yoke to the collar.

Add the collar to the collared T shirt

  • Sew the collar pieces together, the back connecting the 2 front pieces.

  • Pin the collar to the top of the yoke, overlapping slightly so that the right side of the collar is against the wrong side of the yoke.

  • Sew at 0.5 cm (1/32 inch) from the inside collar edge, leaving a few centimeters/inches from the top (stop at the place marked by the yellow arrows).

  • Pin the curves you just sewed, turn the collar right side out, and iron.

  • Finish off this seam by stitching along the collar (the parts you left hanging loose from the yoke) edge to edge.

  • Sew the yoke in the same way, so you have 2 unattached sections that have seams.

  • Selvedge the collar and the yoke all around, at a few mm (1/32 inch) from the edges of the collar.
