Apron Pattern How to make an apron: apron pattern

This cloth apron is both cute and useful: ideal to wear when making arts and crafts. This apron pattern is for a small children's size, but it can easily be altered to adult size.

Supplies
Tools
  • Sewing kit
  • Sewing machine
  • Knitting needle (optional)
Materials
  • 90 x 50 cm (35-1/2 x 20 inches) thick fabric
  • 1 snap button
  • Matching thread
Directions

Cut out the pieces of the apron pattern

  • Cut the fabric into 2 rectangles, one measuring 72 x 50 cm (28-3/8 x 20 inches) and the other measuring 18 x 50 cm (7 x 20 inches).
  • Fold the larger rectangle in half lengthwise.
  • Trace the curves according to the pattern below, cutting both layers at once. This gives you pieces n°1, 5, and 6.

  • For the ties:
    • Take the 18- x 50-cm (7- x 20-inch) rectangle and cut it lengthwise into 3 identical strips.
    • Cut one of these bands at 36 cm (14-1/8 inches).
    • This gives you pieces n° 2, 3, and 4.

Assembling the apron

  • Hem around piece n°1, being careful at the corners.

  • For the pocket:
    • Take the 2 rounded pieces (n° 5 and 6).
    • Sew them together, right sides together, along the length of the rectangle's long, straight side.
    • Make a doubled edge of 1 cm (3/8 inch) along the long side.
    • Position the pocket on the apron, pinning it and then sewing it, 5 mm (1/16 inch) in from the border, all along the rounded edges.
  • For the belt and neckline:
    • Fold pieces n° 2, 3, and 4 lengthwise.
    • Sew them, right sides together, 5 mm (1/16 inch) from the edge.
    • Turn them right side out with the help of a knitting needle.
    • Sew along the same side again.

  • Sew the 2 large belt pieces (n° 2 and 3) to points C and D as shown in the photos.
  • In the same manner, sew one of the ends of the colored strip (piece n°4) to point B. Use the selvedge of the fabric for the exposed ends (or use a zig-zag stitch).

  • Finish by attaching 1 half of the snap button at point A on the apron and the opposite half at point E on the neckline.

Variation for the pocket, belt, and neckline

  • Use a dish towel that measures 50 x 70 cm (19-11/16 x 27-9/16 inches).
  • Cut out the rounded pieces that will serve as the pocket.
  • Most of the hemming is already done, so finish with a bias tape along the rounded parts of the neckline. Use this bias tape to make the belt, as well. Plan for at least 2 m (78-3/4 inches) of bias tape.
