Kids' Slippers Pattern How to make cosy kids slippers
 :

These kids' slippers will warm up their little feet and give them confidence in their steps. In fabric or in leather, with flowers or with stripes: it's up to you to decide!

The pattern is available in different sizes, from 25 to 30 (Europe), 7.5 to 12 (UK), and 8.5 to 13 (U.S.).

Supplies
Tools
Materials
  • Fabric: 1 type for the upper, 1 type for the lining, and 1 type for the soles
NB: Use different weights of fabric according to the season for which you are making the slippers. If the shoes are being made for children who are already walking, a sole of leather or suede (lined with cotton) is suggested to avoid the risk to slipping.
  • Assorted sewing thread
  • 2 buttons
  • Flat elastic
Directions

Make the parts for the kids' slippers

  • Download the patterns.
NB: The patterns go up to size 30 (Europe)/size 12 (UK)/size 13 (U.S.), but the form is easily adapted for all little feet.
  • Cut out the fabric:
    • for the upper, 4 times (2 for the outside and 2 for the lining).
    • for the back, 4 times (2 for the outside and 2 for the lining).
    • for the sole, 2 times.

  • Sew the 2 outside pieces for the upper together, right sides together, along the less rounded side, 5 mm (1/16 inch) from the edge.
  • Turn it right side out, press the fold, and sew it at 3 mm (1/32 inch) from the edge.
  • Sew a zig-zag stitch along the unsewn side to hold the 2 layers together.

  • Sew the 2 pieces for the back together, right sides together, along one of the long edges, at 5 mm (1/16 inch) from the edge.
  • Turn it right side out, press the fold, and sew at 3 mm (1/32 inch) from the edge.

  • Sew at 1.5 cm (5/8 inch) from the sewn edge so that you can slip an elastic through it.
  • Sew a zig-zag stitch along the opposite side to hold the 2 layers together.

Assemble the kids' slippers

  • Baste the upper and back to the slipper to the sole, right sides together, aligning the front and back of the slipper. In this inside-out mode, the fabric that forms the back of the opening will fall on the outside of the front section.

  • Sew 5 mm (1/16 inch) from the edge and turn it right side out.

Final touches for the kids' slippers

  • Pass a flat elastic through the back part of the slipper. Overlap the 2 ends of the elastic and sew them solidly together so that the fabric gathers slightly.

  • Sew a button solidly onto the upper, passing through all of the layers, including the elastic.

  • Make the second slipper in the same way.

Variations

  • No lining: use thick cotton or wool fabric, depending on the season. You'll need to adjust the back part to be able to pass an elastic through it.
  • All leather: without lining and with exterior seams.

Tips
  • If the slippers are a little too big, make a dart in the upper.
  • To make the back fit higher on the ankle, make the back rectangle larger (see the commentary by Tomlou on Emmanuelle's blog).
