Riddle me this:

I'm an indispensable accessory for the comfort of all, but I'm also very useful for seamstresses. What am I?

...a soft quilted cushion, of course! Useful for sitting or as a pincushion, depending on the size.

Materials

For a cushion measuring about 40 cm (15-3/4 inches):
- Band of fabric measuring 42 x 92 cm (16-1/2 x 36-1/4 inches)
- Wadding
- 4 buttons for decoration
- Matching thread

Directions

Make the base of the quilted cushion

Cut 2 squares measuring 42 x 42 cm (16-1/2 x 16-1/2 inches) for the top and bottom and 4 rectangles (42 x 12 cm/16-1/2 x 4-3/4 inches) for the sides.

Sew the sides, right sides together, 1 by 1 to the squares, at 1 cm (3/8 inch) from the edge.

Sew the edges in a way that will give it a quilted look:
- Prick the side at 1 cm (3/8 inch) from the top edge and make the needle come out again on top, at 1 cm (3/8 inch) from the edge, moving slightly away (to the left or right, depending on which end you started on) from your original stitch.
- Prick the top again, at 1 mm (1/32 inch) from the last stitch, then stitch repeat this stitch along the length of the side, always moving in a progressive direction away from your original stitch.
- Pull the thread to gather the edge.

Repeat this stitch all the way around the cushion on the top and bottom (you'll have to go around the whole cushion twice).

Finish with the 4 buttons, pushing the needle all the way through the cushion and coming out through the button on the opposite side. Pull the thread tight to emphasize the quilted look.
