Materials
- Fabric for the front, 41 x 41 cm (16 x 16 inches)
- Fabric for the back, 51 x 51 cm (20 x 20 inches)
- Fabric for the border, 4 strips measuring 6.5 x 41 cm (2-1/2 x 16 inches)
- Fabric scraps for the design, 4 colors
- Fusible interfacing
- Stuffing
- Buttons
- Paper
- Heavy paper (like cardstock)
Directions
- Print or draw the template below, then trace it onto heavy paper.
- Cut out the pieces from the heavy paper.
- On the non-glue side of the fusible interfacing, trace and cut:
- 4 large petals
- 4 inside tulip petals
- 4 right tulip petals
- 4 left tulip petals
- 12 leaves
- Assign a color of scrap fabric to each group of cutouts, combining the left and right tulip petals.
NB: You should have one type of fabric left over. It will be used for the buttercups.
- Place the fusible interfacing leaves, tracing side up, on top of the chosen fabric.
- Sew over the outlines on the interfacing.
- Repeat for all other cutout groups on their chosen fabrics.
- Cut out all pieces close to the seams.
- Cut a small slit in the fusible interfacing side of each piece.
NB: This is more easily done when you pinch the 2 layers so they separate slightly.
- Use a safety pin to push the fabric through the interfacing, turning each piece right side out.
- Arrange the 4 large petals, symmetrically, in the center.
- Arrange the tulips in each corner.
- Arrange the leaves as you like.
- Iron everything down to fuse the interface.
- Design at least 4 vines.
NB: The 4 minimum vines should go from between each petal of the center flower to the base of each tulip.
- Hand stitch along the vine lines.
- Overstitch over your hand stitching.
- On the unused fabric, cut out the circle template, 4 times.
- Hand stitch a seam around the outer edge of each circle, making sure the thread isn't doubled.
- Pull this seam until it gathers evenly, leaving a small hole in the center.
- Draw the needle through the center and around the circle, inserting it back in the same way.
- Pull this thread tight until it's noticeably pulling the fabric in. This makes 1 side of a petal.
- Rotate the circle a little and repeat, forming 5 petals.
- Sew a button onto the right side of the buttercup.
- Sew the buttercups onto the pillow near leaves.
- Sew a button onto the center flower.
- Sew 1 strip of fabric onto each side of the appliquéd square.
- Cut the 61-cm (20-inch) square in half and position both pieces, overlapping slightly, on top of the appliquéd square, right sides together.
- Sew the edges together.
- Turn right side out.
- Fill with stuffing.
